Ministerial conference on the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Brussels, 13 February 2006

OCHA and the European Union will convene a ministerial conference hosted by the Belgian Government on the Democratic Republic of the Congo on the occasion of the launch of the Humanitarian Action Plan. More than 1,200 people in DRC die every day from the effects of civil war: malnutrition, disease, and displacement. The
2006 Action Plan is the result of intensive work of the entire humanitarian community in the DRC. The Conference constitutes a significant opportunity to bring together all of the actors who can make the necessary contributions toward alleviating the suffering of millions of Congolese and helping to give them access to the basic human requirements.

The meeting will be chaired by Jan Egeland, USG for Humanitarian Affairs and UN Emergency Relief Coordinator, and Louis Michel, the EU Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid. The conference will be opened by Karel De Gucht, Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs. The debate will be introduced by Armand De Decker, Minister for Development Cooperation of Belgium.

The conference will take place at the Egmont Palace, Petit Sablon, 1000 Brussels. 9:30 - 16:00.
